Read Chapter 4b:2 Imagine you are an upper class woman in Medieval England in AD 1215. Write a letter to a friend in France. In your letter:

explain the changes that have just happened with the signing of the Magna Carta
feudal system: a system of organising a society by providing land in return for loyalty and work
feudalism: a system in which the ruler owned all the land and subdivided it among important subjects in return for their loyalty and for taxes paid in money, goods or services. The system encouraged loyalty both to the ruler and to the local lord.
Magna Carta 1215: the first attempt in English Law to limit the power of the monarchy. The King had to respect the law.
Upper Class
A small group of wealthy people controlled society.
Men had large estates but were often away at war or involved in politics.
Women had few rights and were regarded as their husbands' property. They looked after the household and children.
Boys were well educated. Girls received a more limited education relating to arts and household management.
Lower Class
The vast majority of people.
Men worked in all aspects of farming.
Women worked on the farm, especially during the harvest, and looked after the house and children.
Men in towns could learn a trade.
Children received little education and worked as soon as they were old enough.
