Outline the argument for and against such controls in wartime.
For
  • The more troops there were, the better Australia would be protected and be able to avoid invasion
  • Jobs that needed to be completed more urgently were filled, instead of people doing a job that wasn’t very important
  • Everybody received equal amounts of food as there was a lack of supplies
  • It was harder for the enemy to find out important details which may have been leaked in letters, on the radio, newspapers etc. The panic wasn’t as extreme as people didn’t know all the details.
Against
  • People did not have a choice and they were being forced to fight which raised many issues like it being immoral to force men to kill other men etc.
  • People were forced to work in areas that they weren’t trained in and this may have resulted in a poor quality of work
  • It was very difficult to provide a sufficient, nutritious diet for you family when crucial supplies were low in stock
  • Loved ones didn’t know where there brothers, boyfriends, sons, husbands etc. were. The fighting men couldn’t tell their families where they were.
